Materials needed:

2 bins – ideally one for non recyclable waste and one for recyclable waste.  However, it could be any 2 types of bins to categorize litter

Game suitable for: 1 child or more

Supervision required: yes by an older child who is knowledgeable at sorting, a teenager or an adult

How to play:

Children have to take litter from the ground and put it into the appropriate bin.

Time for this activity is 10 minutes.

A child can pick up as many items as they can carry.  If they drop any items onto the floor before successfully sorting, they have to pick it up and sort it again.  They can only do this after they have correctly sorted all the items they initially carried.

If each item is not sorted correctly, the supervising person calls out ‘wrong bin, please start again’ and the children have to re-sort. 

Each correctly sorted item obtains 1 score.

The child who completes the activity first, or if time runs out, the one with the highest score wins.
