Corn starch, maize starch, maizena or cornflour (British English) is the starch derived from corn (maize) grain. It is ground from the endo sperm or white heart of the corn kernel. Cornstarch is made from corn and only contains carbohydrates (no protein). It is a protein-free product. It’s preferred over flour as a thickener because the resulting gel is transparent, rather than opaque. It is also relatively flavorless in comparison and provides roughly two times the thickening power.

This white powdery substance is also used for many cooking, household, and industrial purposes. In the kitchen, it is often used as a thickening agent for sauces, gravies, glazes, soups, casseroles, pies, and other desserts.  Cornstarch is really close to corn flour but they are not exactly the same.

It is not a rich source of vitamins and minerals.  However, it may help to boost calories for those who need it, act as a source of energy and prevent low blood sugar in people with nocturnal hypoglycemia.

Cornstarch may be a convenient and cost-effective remedy for skin irritation. Many people use it to soothe sunburns and reduce skin itchiness. Cornstarch is also beneficial for oily skin, as it gets rid of the annoying excessive oil in your skin and it regulates the level of fats your skin produces every day.  Cornstarch helps to unclog your pores as well.

    Unique Uses of Corn Starch:
    1. Using it as a facial cleanser to remove dead skin. This is because of the mild abrasive property of cornstarch.
    2. Soothes Sunburns: Corn starch can be quite beneficial for sun tanned skin.
    3. Insect Bites treatment to get relief from itching. It is calming for the skin too..
    4. Treats Underarm Rashes: This is an inexpensive remedy to treat armpit rashes. Corn starch is found to soothe the underarm rashes and irritation.
    5. Treat Heat Rashes under Breasts: Many women have found relief with itchy rashes under breasts by using corn starch. It helps keep the skin dry and discourages fungus growth.
    6. Natural Remedy for Diaper Rash: You can reduce baby’s discomfort caused due to diaper rash using corn starch. It is an effective and natural remedy.
    7. Facial Mask for refreshing, soothing and cleansing the skin
    8. Treat Your Oily Face As cornstarch absorbs excess oil from your face.
    9. Homemade Baby Powder: Corn starch is an excellent replacement for baby powder. Remedy for Burns: Corn starch can be used to soothe the burn on the skin.
    10. Solution for Athlete’s Foot: If you are suffering from athlete’s foot, corn starch can give you relief
    Skin benefits:
    • Cornstarch’s anti-inflammatory properties help to soothe skin rashes, burns and itching.
    • It soaks the excessive oil from your skin and keeps your makeup as is for long.
    • Its moisture absorption property helps to get rid of sweating of feet when you wear shoes.
    • Cornstarch is a natural moisture-absorbing powder which is often used as an alternative to chemically formulated talcum powders.
    • Cornstarch can be used as a setting powder for oily or shiny skin.
    • Applying cornstarch mixed in lavender oil on your underarms works as a natural deodorant.

Citric Acid works by exfoliating the upper layer of dead skin cells to help clean pores, even skin tone and soften and smooth the skin. It is part of the Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) family and can also be used as pH adjusters. AHA stands for alpha hydroxy acid.

They are water-soluble acids made from sugary fruits. They help peel away the surface of your skin so that new, more evenly pigmented skin cells may generate and take their place. After use, you’ll likely notice that your skin is smoother to the touch.

Is Citric Acid Good For Your Skin? Absolutely! Being a member of the AHA family you will find that citric acid delivers a vast variety of benefits for the skin. It has the ability to chemically exfoliate the face by dissolving the glue that holds skin cells together.

Citric acid is generally considered safe for all skin types unless you have allergies or sensitive skin.  However, it can be particularly beneficial for those with oily skin.

HOW TO USE CITRIC ACID IN FORMULATIONS?

Citric Acid can be added to creams, lotions, serums, cleansers, shampoos, conditioners, bath products, and many other cosmetics.

      Citric Acid functions as a(n):

      • Acidic reagent
      • Antioxidant
      • Exfoliant

      It helps to:

      • React with Baking Soda to create fizzing therefore making the experience of bath products really sensations.
      • Assist with skin exfoliation, renewal, and brightening
      • Assist with protection against free radical damage.

Citric acid provides a selection of benefits and treating skin problems such as:

      • Mild breakouts, such as spots and blackheads
      • Pigmentation and dark spots
      • Fine lines and wrinkles
      • Shrinks pore size
      • Unclogs pores

Let us now explain why citric acid is used in skincare.

Citric Acid Is Packed with Antioxidants

Packed with antioxidants, citric acid will protect the skin’s barrier from everyday aggressors, such as pollution, environmental and toxins, all ready to cause damage to the skin leading to breakouts and premature ageing. With citric acid your skin will remain healthy and refreshed with signs of ageing diminished.

Citric Acid Can Adjust The pH In Your Skin

Citric acid is slightly different from the other AHA’s available, as it can adjust the pH levels of skincare product formulas which stops them from being too alkaline. This is important throughout cosmetic products as the skin’s natural pH levels are usually more acidic therefore by applying too much alkaline depletes the skin of vital natural fats. However,  applying a product that is also too acidic will cause some stinging and irritation. Luckily balancing pH is an easy task for citric acid.

Citric Acid Can Exfoliate the Skin

Some studies have shown citric acid to be able to exfoliate the skin, rejuvenating the glow back to the former lacklustre complexion.  Citric acid will also shrink and unclog pores, slough away dead skin cells and debris leaving you with a luminous glow.

Citric Acid Can Repair Sun Damaged Skin And Even Out Skin Tone

Citric acid has been clinically proven to improve the appearance of pigmentation and dark spots on the skin. When applied topically citric acid can work in the outer layers of the skin repairing the skin barrier function.   It prevents UV rays penetrating areas suffering from photo damage causing the pigmentation to deepen in color.

It is important to remember that although citric acid can help treat UV damage, it also makes the skin more photosensitive so applying daily SPF is crucial.

Go Eco Love’s handmade, natural and organic products such as Bath Bombs – Lavender, Mint, Rose, Calendula & Ocean Breeze contain citric acid.  These can be found at our shop at: goecolove.com/shop

Homemade face masks moisturise, regenerate and cleanse. They are cheap and quick to prepare. Try a mask made of yeast, eggs, coffee, honey or milk.

Who of us has never experimented with homemade masks? Even if it is not a very complicated recipe. Surely, most of us at least once have tried a cucumber or honey mixture.

Homemade masks have an advantage over ready-made products! Firstly, they are made from only natural ingredients – you have control over what you add to them. Secondly, they are cheap – how much do yeast, yoghurt or linseed cost? It is good to apply homemade masks at least once a week, preferably interchangeably – once moisturising or nourishing and cleansing. • 1 tablespoon of warm milk

Mix the ingredients and apply the resulting mixture in a thick layer on your face. After 20 minutes, wash it off with warm water. The yeast mask is recommended for acne-prone skin. Depending on your skin type, you can add a drop of olive oil (if your skin is dry) or lemon juice (if you fight blemishes) to this basic recipe. Camel milk originates from the Bedouin, nomad and pastoral cultures ever since camels were domesticated thousands of years ago.   Usually camel herders traveled long distances with their camels.   They survived only on camel milk when taking the camels on long distances to graze in desert and hot environments.  This clearly shows the hydrating qualities of camel milk.

Lately, the camel dairy farming industry has grown in Australia and the United States as an environmentally-friendly alternative to cow dairy farming.  Using camels meant they were using a species well-adapted to arid regions.

Camel milk has different nutritional characteristics, but the proportions of nutrients are highly variable based on a number of factors, including type and age of camel, climate, what it eats, and milking method.  It can be used to make products such as yoghurt and ice cream. However, it is very difficult to turn into butter or cheese.

Camel Milk is rich in healthy vitamins and minerals, and contains disease-fighting immunoglobulins, providing potent healing benefits for the skin biome. The unique milk structure can penetrate lower layers of the skin and provide everything that is needed for healthy, younger, and brighter looking skin.

It is known to have high concentrations of alpha hydroxy acids (AHA).   These acids help to exfoliate dead skin, allowing for increased cell turnover and renewal of new skin.  Specifically, camel milk is paced with lactic acid, an AHA that’s considered to be the most skin-friendly acid.  This acid is especially beneficial for sensitive skin.

Other skincare acids gently sloughs away dead skin cells and leaves skin looking fresh but lactic acid not only does this but it also increases skin’s production of ceramides.  It also helps skin to retain moisture, resulting in a plumper, glowing skin.

Camel milk is growing in popularity and more farmers are choosing selective breeding.  However, for now, camel milk remains an expensive luxury.
