Table of Contents

There are many varieties of salts available in the market however, Epson salt is rather special.  Epsom salt (or “salts”) was first found in the waters of an England town called Epsom, in the UK.  It contains magnesium and may help the body get rid of toxins while also reducing swelling, stiffness, and pain. It is a natural and organic source of both magnesium and sulfur.   So it is no wonder that epsom salts are commonly used in bath salts, muscle relaxers and pain relievers.

Several studies have indicated that in water, Epsom salts dissociate into magnesium ions and sulfate ions. These ions are easy to absorb through the skin.1  This proves that Epsom salt has benefits skin absorption.  So it’s no wonder we at Go Eco Love, sell natural Epsom Salts in order to enhance your bathing experience.

How useful are Epsom salts for skin?

Other than increasing skin absorption, Epsom salts may help remove dead skin cells and loosen blackheads and are often used for acne prone skin.  Applying the Epsom salt by mixing with an oil, such as olive oil or almond oil, to form a loose paste and gently applying the mixture as an allover face mask is a fantastic use of Epsom salts.  You can do this or only use on acne-prone areas.

Is it safe to take an Epsom salt bath every day?

Using Epsom salts in a bath is amazingly relaxing. Baths in general can be meditative and are a great way to take a break from daily stressors.  Due to its properties as explained above, Epsom salts helps your bath become even more relaxing by soothing tired muscles and easing stress.

      Introduction:

With our plastic way of life, the beautiful oceans, seas, estuaries, rivers, lakes, soil and atmosphere are polluted with plastic debris.  These plastic debris or plastic wastage come from different materials and are in different sizes.  Micro plastics are any plastic waste which is less than 5mm (milimetres) in length.  Their impact on health is significant.  As many of you know plastics take about 500 to 1000 years to bio degrade.  As such, these micro plastics also take a minimum of 500 years to degrade so once consumed they remain in your body for a very long time.

In 2019, there was a scientific literature review conducted on micro plastics pollution on seas, estuaries, rivers, lakes, soil and atmosphere.  More than 200 papers on the Web of Science database, published between 2006 and 2018, were reviewed.  It was then noted that further work needs to be undertaken before we have exact information about the amount of micro plastics that are released into the environment.

Fig 1 (part of Reference 1)
Where do these micro plastics come from though?

Sadly they come from you and me, the human.  Plastics and micro plastics were introduced by us.  Micro plastics come from our consumables and habits.  One more reason we have to be careful about our behavior.

Micro beads are a type of micro plastic.   They are extremely small pieces of manufactured polyethylene plastic.  Unfortunately many of the exfoliators and health and skincare products such as cleansers and toothpastes have these.2  Now do you understand why Go Eco Love is so into natural skincare?! Can you imagine what you are putting on your skin? There is a whole series of skin care education tips on Go Eco Love about what to watch out for when you buy skin care products.

Anyways, these micro plastics easily pass through water filtration systems and end up in the ocean and Lakes because of the fact they are so tiny.  So what do you think is the end result? They end up back into our body!  An example is the sea salts we intake – they get back into our body through things we ingest.  Once they are back into our body, they cause multiple health issues resulting in endocrine deficiencies and stomach problems.  They are also very harmful to aquatic life.

Upon ingesting these, synthetic particles smaller than 150 μm can enter the gastroinstinal system. Scientists speculate that 0.3% of these particles should be absorbed and particles bigger than 10 µm can even pass through the blood–brain barrier and placenta with potential consequences to an unborn child. 3  These digested particles result in toxicity and inflammation to your stomach.  See below image on all the harms to our body.

Let me tell you a real story! Recently we were on a trip to Cuba, sailing away on a catamaran.  Whilst we were all enjoying themselves under the scorching sun, the bartender served everyone a pack of snacks which had sandwich, few nuts and biscuits.  These came in plastic wrapping.  We were also given plastic cups for our drinks and there was an announcement to put all our rubbish into the bins.

Many were out, lying on the netting of the catamaran enjoying the beautiful sun, seeing the sparking water with the air blowing on our faces.  However, right in front of us, we saw many families and children throwing their waste through the netting of the catamaran.  As soon as the adult in the family started doing this, the children followed.  How sad is this? When will people ever learn? This is why we at Go Eco Love are passionate about education and awareness.

      The netting of the catamaran

We believe the more we keep educating and repeating about conscientious behavior, people will change.  The change has to be in the way you think.  It has to be in your attitude.  Let’s all join together and make a positive impact on the environment.

All the way from the sacred Himalayas with you in mind……

Let’s explore the benefits of Himalayan pink salts.  What are these beautiful pink crystals? What’s the difference from that of a normal cooking salt?  What is the fashion hype about these Himalayan salts and why bother even using it?

        Himalayan Pink Salts
        Intro

There are so many varieties of salts now available in the global market. Out of the many, these Himalayan rock salts have gained huge popularity among consumers due to their diverse nutritional and medicinal properties. There are two types of Himalayan rock salts. One is the Himalayan pink salt and the other one is Himalayan black salt. However less is known about the black salt.1

Sanskrit to the Indians is akin to Latin to the Europeans.  Himalayas or the himalaya comes from the sanskrit word hima = snow and alaya = temple, a resting place of quietness.  The Himalayas is the name of one of the mountain range in south and east of Asia.  The Himalayan salt comes from this region but not exactly from this mountain range itself.  It actually comes from the mines of the Punjab region of Pakistan, which is rather close to Islamabad.

These Himalayan salt mines are dated to even before prehistoric man existed.  Therefore, these pink salts do not have traces of human imprints ie microplastics in them.  This itself elevates the healthiness aspect  of the Himalayan salt as a study has shown that table salt could have up to 90% microplastics.2

Research has also shown that the Himalayan pink salts contain a variety of essential nutrients such as iron, zinc, magnesium and calcium. Thus, from the consumption perspective, it is therefore far superior nutritionally to the white salt. 3

In addition because there isn’t any microplastic adulteration in these salts, they are much more favorable to the endocrine system and the stomach.

        Uses and benefits

How about it’s uses for skin care?

There is plenty of qualitative and anecdotal evidence but less quantitative evidence about the effects of these on skin care.  Salt has antimicrobial properties.  So by virtue of its class, Himalayan salts have antimicrobial properties as well.  There was also increasing qualitative evidence that Himalayan salts are beneficial for treating acne. Due to their excellent moisture retention properties their effect on people with psoriasis and eczema is also soothing and relaxing.  In addition, Himalayan salts have helped to reduce scaling, redness, itchiness and irritation.

Baths, rich in minerals have been helpful for people with psoriasis and eczema.  This goes back to many eras actually.  Bathing with salts have been used historically for deep cleansing of the body.  Himalayan salts which have a rich mineral composition3 are perfect for such usage.
